The Leader Workshop
April, 2003
|
Normally conducted for only one organization at a time, the Leader
Workshop will be offered in April, 2003, to participants from multiple
organizations. |
| The
purpose of the Leader Workshop is to provide a technology that empowers
people to lead, manage, and work powerfully with others to produce
breakthrough results in their organizations. By technology
we mean something reliably replicable, and not based on belief or
particular personality traits. |
| The
Leader Workshop has been conducted for more than 30 organizations,
including for-profit, not-for-profit and government organizations.
At Jet Propulsion Laboratory it was offered over 50 times and to a
total of 1,200 participants. Over 99% of participants report the workshop
as being of tremendous value and highly recommended. |

Workshop Outline |
| While
covering principles and models, the 5-Day Leader Workshop has a real-world
results orientation, with numerous demonstrations and exercises concerning
how to apply the workshop technology to the participants' particular
issues. |
| Day
1 and 2 are focused on communications. After covering some basic
definitions, such as breakthrough and power, Day 1 presents
a model of the linkage between communication and the producing of
breakthrough results. Day 1 also addresses powerful listening
(by which is meant, listening so as to cause something to happen)
and provides an ability to see the invisible (to us) filters through
which we listen and which modify the message. |
| Day
2 focuses on effective speaking, i.e., speaking so as to cause
something to happen with a minimum amount of resources. A powerful
model of why people behave as they do is presented, providing insight
into how behavior may be impacted. The various conversations required
to be managed are reviewed and practical guidelines for managing them
are covered. Included are the conversations going on in the speaker's
head, those going on in the listener's head, and those going on between
the two parties. A structure of conversations that reliably lead to
accomplishment is presented. How to speak so as to more reliably produce
action is specifically covered. |
| Day
3 addresses the management role in supporting a group of people
in accomplishing breakthroughs. An effective, powerful and operational
definition of management is proposed, one very different than the
typical view of employees being resources for a manager to fulfill
his or her promises. A reliable process for handling any obstacle
and producing breakthroughs is reviewed in detail. Also addressed
is handling distractions so you can be fully present in conversations,
active listening, and insuring that no loose ends are left when a
conversation is over. |
| Day
4 addresses the formation and maintenance of groups. The different
types of groups, only one of which is a team, are reviewed. Suggestions
are made as to when to use the different types of groups, and specifically
how to create and maintain a real team. Also addressed are how to
resolve conflict between individuals, and how to conduct effective
meetings. |
| Day
5 addresses leadership issues. First addressed is the definition
of leadership itself. Leadership and the necessary tools are described
in a way that participants can see what they need to do to be effective
leaders. An important leadership skill is getting people to buy-in,
particularly when they see no possibility in your viewpoint or project.
Participants will have an opportunity to practice getting buy-in and
will get immediate feedback on what worked and what didn't work. How
one builds a relationship of trust, a foundation for accomplishing
almost anything with others, is then discussed and demonstrated. The
workshop ends with an exploration of the power and importance of appreciation
and acknowledgement in building relationships that support a group
of people in producing breakthroughs. |
